Tips for Increasing Participation

Trainers must be able to balance learner participation to achieve the desired outcomes of the training session. The following techniques may be helpful in getting participants more actively involved

• Tell a relevant story about yourself. This helps break the ice and introduce you to the audience.
• Ask open-ended questions to spur discussion.
• Use polling. Ask for a show of hands. Raise your own hand as you ask the question to encourage others to raise theirs.
• Play devil's advocate. Express an opinion that is contrary to popular belief. Someone in the audience is likely to agree or disagree.
• Use participants' comments to spur further discussion. Ask others in the group for their reactions to the comments or situations.
• Allow time for regular breaks throughout the training session. Participants will stay vitalized and interested in the topic with regular opportunity to stretch their legs and leave the room periodically.
