As a consumer of the Montana Independent Living Project in Butte, Montana, I was asked to become a Peer Advocate. Eventually I was assigned to work with Todd Hoar, BSB Developmental Disabilities Council Director and BSB ADA Coordinator, to help form and reestablish Butte Silver Bow’s ADA Advisory Committee. Currently, I am involved as the Chair of the Butte Silver Bow ADA Advisory Committee. My interest as a Peer Advocate is to open and remove barriers to the disabled and find creative, proactive and innovative ways to improve accessibility to everyone in our community. Butte Silver Bow deserves a refreshing new look at including persons with disabilities in events, festivals, museums, historic buildings, civic groups, public trails, transportation systems, educational facilities, malls, commercial buildings, and accessible housing.
I serve on the Board of Directors for Butte Special Riders, a horseback riding program for children and adults with disabilities. My role in this program involves graphic design for promotional materials, record keeping, attending training, assisting with the horses and disabled riders, and assisting with fundraising projects. In addition, I continue to teach art projects at a local horse camp every spring, summer and fall. Painting watercolors of horses is not only therapeutic, but a passion. My original artwork can be viewed at www.dancinghorsecreations.com.
